There are presently more than 400,000 different species of mold known to man. However, only a handful of these types of mold could pose a serious threat to your health, and they are referred to as toxigenic molds. It is important to ensure that you remove mold from spaces, such as air ducts, basements, crawl spaces, bathrooms or kitchens or to hire professional experts to do it for you.
PENICILLIUM
There are more than 100 species of penicillium, and Penicillium Aurantiogriseum has been identified as a source of mycotoxins. These are very harmful pathogenic toxins recognized as the causative agents of neurological diseases. Additionally, Penicillium marneffei has been known to cause liver, lung, kidney, skin and soft tissue infections.
CLADOSPORIUM
Cladosporium is an allergic black mold that can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals but that are rarely pathogenic. Cladosporium has been known to cause sinusitis and pulmonary infection, which could develop into respiratory infections like pneumonia over time.
STACHYBOTRYS
Exposure to the mycotoxins found in Stachybotrys chartarum may cause chronic fatigue, headaches, fever, eye irritations, as well as irritation to mucosal membranes in the mouth, nose and throat. It may also lead to sneezing, rashes, chronic coughing, nausea, vomiting, and bleeding in the lungs.
CHAETOMIUM
There are more than 80 species of chaetomium and there is strong medical evidence linking prolonged exposure to this type of mold to irreversible neurological damage. Chaetomium mold spores are known for their rapid growth and if they are not dealt with immediately, they could lead to multiple sclerosis, lupus and some forms of cancer.
ASPERGILLUS
There are 160 species of aspergillus known to man, and 2 of these have been discovered to contain pathogenic properties. Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus fumigates both produce Aflotoxins, which are dangerous carcinogenic toxins that cause allergic reactions and damage to the liver, kidneys lungs, heart and brain.
